I wish I had made this up but it's true.
I asked out a man. Yes, he was beautiful. I admit, I was shallow and he looked great across the table. We talked about some things, kinda fluffy, then he starts telling me about his alien encounter.
My first thought - it's a joke.
No, he's not laughing, continuing with his story. And it's a long story. It's full of details and hand gestures. I'm sure he has visual aids somewhere, and I'm lucky we went out, not having dinner at his house.
Apparently, I did not know him well enough and now I don't want to.
Then I decide to be silly, maybe he'll get mad and leave.
"Look, a whole different species who didn’t even know you, threw you back. Doesn't that tell you something?" He doesn't even slow down on his descriptions. Obviously, he’s not?listening to me.
Okay, final insult - "Isn't this something you want to save for a second date, assuming you get one?"
He quit paying attention to me many sentences ago and isn't about to start now.
I excuse myself to the ladies room. He's still talking as I'm leaving the table. Well, I tuned him out long ago, fair is fair. I don't know what he's saying but I'm sure he loves the sound of his own voice.
As I’m inching my way down a hall looking for an exit, the waitress who was at our table says, "Your date is so cute!" Ah, silly girl, you know so little of which you speak. Now's my chance!
"Think so?" I comment, "He's yours! Take this note to him when you see me driving away," I say as I scribble 'Goodbye' on a napkin while handing her five bucks. Hope he's got taxi fare home.
I've got caller ID. And I use it for just such emergencies.
This actually happened on a summer night in Dallas, Texas.
I think there's a very funny song in there somewhere, and one day I’ll write it.

There are some clubs that begin with this very topic, some seminars and online groups, etc. This guys sounds like he was enjoying watching you freak out, or he really did have one, or really did think he had one, and was sure that this topic would be quite appealing. He was wrong.
That could not have been his first time for waltzing into a brand new relationship with that pitch. So, it either worked before, and it didn't work with you, which probably did not discourage him. Or it has never worked before, and he is so stupid or borderline, he doesn't get it.
In all of these cases, you are smart to have done exactly what you did.
The absolute worst thing that a man like this can conclude is: "She is willing to at least talk about Corrigan, my Alien buddy, so she has got to be willing to get to know me!"
