Phrases I Love . . . or . . . What Took You So Long To Say That?

Men become tongue-tied around women. Don't worry, women become stupid around men. Talking to each other has been maybe a not so important problem as an awkward social gesture since language came in vogue. Anyone interested in anyone gets excited, then let the confusion begin! Everything the object of affection says is important. Anything can be misconstrued -- a gesture, a certain word, saying nothing at all. This begins at puberty when we all discover the opposite sex, or the same sex, or any sex, and continues most of our lives.
1. I would really like to meet and get to know you.
A great pick up line is that simple. Ask anyone their name, ask something general about their life -- Local? Visiting? Have they seen anything? Let someone talk about themselves and they'll fall in love with you.
2. I've been waiting for someone like you.
Wouldn't you LOVE to hear that? Doesn't matter if it's true, the thought is great. Makes you feel wonderful, saying it and receiving it. It can mean all the crap you went through for so long was worth it for the prize you just won!
3. What are you doing the rest of your life?
I don't care if you're leaving town tomorrow, say this and watch the smiles. Everyone is afraid to talk about any kind of future together. Maybe it's the general fall out from 9-11, maybe it's just that their previous dating track record has flashed before their eyes, but say this anyway. Realistically, everyone knows tomorrow they go back to reality . . . but right here . . . right now . . . the possibilities light up like signs in Time Square.
4. Wow, you have a brain the size of a planet - intellect is so sexy.
I know that I am not everyone's type, that never bothered me. Even when I knew they were looking for someone else, I could talk to them, make them laugh and feel good, and quietly win them over to at least a fun conversation. This isn't forever, this is for the moment, to get a conversation going. One of my comforting thoughts is that looks will fade, but I'll be smart all my life!
5. I want my friends to see how lucky I am.
This compliment will get you laid every time. Much as we think we make our own decisions, to have it confirmed by people we know and love is the ultimate acceptance. This phrase means you're bringing someone important with you to meet everyone else who matters in your life. What a great get together!
6. We're together.
Everyone's afraid of commitment, at least in the beginning. So it might not be true love, but it's wonderful to have someone you can count on. Saying this means you are more than friends. It has a certain sympathy and caring to it. Wish people would use it more.
7. We like so many things together, let's find out more.
Just like the above together thing, this means there is a future, or at least you'll find out if there's a future. Life shouldn't be a contest, maybe not even a relay race, but it should have all the fun of a game, at least in the beginning.
8. Here, let me get that for you.
I can count the times I heard this on one hand. Whatever happened to people helping people? And where is that knight in shining armor who's supposed to rescue a gal in distress? Doesn't matter who is helping who, it shows how kind and attentive you can be, and that makes a lot of points with everyone. If guys said this more to women, life would get a lot easier and happier.
9. I just wanted to hear your voice.
I don't know of anyone who receives enough phone calls from people they like or love. Most phone calls are a waste of time, makes me wonder why I leave my cel phone on at all. You can change a person's day with a short contact and sweet words . . . start now!
10. Why don't we do it again?
As long as whatever you did was not painful and did not leave a mark, always ask for another helping. You don't have to do it, you can just sit back and laugh about it. But it means you had a good time, or an interesting time, or some kind of time, instead of the clock just ticking. Say this and you could get lucky all over again.
There are a lot of phrases that bounce around people, most are silly, some are just a waste. Talking, in general, is a very good start. Like most things, the more you do it, the better you get. I listen for great dialog but it's not easy to find in real life. On paper it looks easy but anything written down was read, re-read, edited and probably still going though a literary process by the time you get it. Don't be mean, even if someone else is, and laugh as much as you can with anyone else.
